|Last Friday, the IRS released the 2022 Filing Season Statistics report for week ending May 20, 2022. While the IRS may post additional Filing Season Statistics reports for the next few weeks, this report brings the Year-Over-Year (YOY) E-Filing % Change comparison current with last season’s May 17, 2021 filing deadline. Therefore, this will be the last report we will share with our partners until the IRS issues the final (2) reports following the Oct 15 extension deadline and again in Dec 2022 to close out the calendar year.
On the last report we shared (for week ending May 13), the E-Filing % Change segments continued to decrease as expected, reflecting single-digit YOY growth %s (vs double-digit for weeks prior). With this latest report for week ending May 20, Total Returns Received and all E-Filing % Change segments further decreased and now reflect negative YOY growth %s .
- From last week’s report for week ending May 13, 2022, compared to this week’s report for week ending May 20, 2022, Total EF went from + 6.9% to – 1.0%, Tax Pros went from + 4.4% to – 1.1%; and Self-Prepared / Online went from + 9.9% to – 0.9%. Total Returns Received went from + 5.9% to – 1.8%.
Industry Note: In recent webcast conference calls to discuss latest 3rd Quarter Financial Results that include this tax season, H&R Block and Intuit commented on the record number of 1040 extensions filed this year (count is estimated at > 4M) and so we may likely see positive YOY growth %s nationwide reflected in the IRS report released after the October 15 filing deadline. H&R Block also shared that they will adjust their post-season office schedules accordingly in order to accommodate these potential clients (expect most remaining filers to fall under their assisted filer segment).
