Returns With the arrival of tomorrow’s April 18 filing deadline, don’t forget! Returns and any Extensions – Form 4868, must reach IRS before Midnight on the Tuesday, April 18th deadline to be considered timely filed. The return timestamp is applied at our Central Site processing center and IRS bases timely filed using the (our) transmitter time zone which is 11:59 PM PT.
uTax strongly encourages you to transmit returns (and extensions) throughout the day and at least two hours before the midnight deadline. Again, following these recommendations will help to minimize the impact at the IRS with the increased volume as a result of the last minute rush and help to ensure timely processing of your client’s returns and/or extensions. You should also expect turnaround times for receiving federal acknowledgements to increase during this filing deadline timeframe.
Don’t forget to consider the importance of handling any REJECTED RETURNS, both prior to and after tomorrow’s deadline, to ensure the timely filed deadline is met. Refer to information below.
Rejected Returns Processing Instructions and Deadlines:
- Rejected Returns (Rejected BEFORE Midnight (11:59 PM PT) – Tuesday, April 18
If the return was rejected BEFORE the April 18 due date, it must be resubmitted on or before the April 18th filing deadline to be considered timely filed. You’ll need to fix the errors in the return and e-file again before the Tuesday, April 18 midnight deadline (11:59 PM PT). Returns will be considered late if not submitted successfully to the IRS by 11:59 PM PT on April 18.
- Rejected Returns (Rejected AFTER Midnight, Tuesday – April 18)
If you received a rejection for an e-filed return, you typically have 5 calendar days to correct the reject and resubmit for the return to be considered timely filed. Refer to table below.
Note (1) – If the return was rejected before the April 18 due date, it must have been resubmitted on or before the due date to be considered timely filed.
If you’re not able to correct the errors before the deadline, you’ll need to print and mail the return. A paper return is considered to be filed on time if it’s properly addressed, has correct postage, and is postmarked by April 18, 2023. Be sure to attach IRS Form 8948 – Preparer Explanation for Not Filing Electronically to explain why the return is not being electronically filed.
Refer to IRS Where to File Paper Returns With or Without Payment | Español for mailing addresses and additional information.
